Project Description:

The researchers of this project, primarily from University of Tennessee’s School of Information Sciences program, collaborated with the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) to identify relevant content in varied areas of research that serves NBII’s stakeholders, primarily through use of the Southern Appalachian Information Node (SAIN).  SAIN’s mission is to provide modes of access to the southeastern region’s biodiversity information, therefore, providing researchers with ways to access and retrieve the information and apply to their research. IBIS’ research worked to enhance information access, retrieval and use provided through the SAIN portal. “To support this mission, SAIN partnered with the University of Tennessee’s Center for Information and Communication Studies on the Increasing Biological Information Sources: Technical Assistance and Support for Delivery and Technology Transfer (IBIS) project to identify biodiversity information, and develop tools and services that increase the accessibility and effectiveness of that information.”

To complete the objectives of this project, the researcher developed a survey that was sent to all life and agricultural science faculty from southeastern, research universities; to members of the herbarial community; to those who attended regional conferences and workshops related to this study’s focus; and to regional members of environmental non-profit, land trust, and state fish and wildlife agency communities.
